The latest Nintendo Indie Direct brought a spring bounty of exciting announcements, thrilling the indie gaming community with an array of new and returning titles set to enhance the Nintendo Switch lineup. While I was (once again) disappointed by the absence of an update on the highly anticipated Hollow Knight: Silksong, the showcase had its highlights, notably the surprise announcement of a sequel to one of my all-time favorite indie games, SteamWorld Heist.
SteamWorld Heist 2 Sets Sail This Summer
Let's begin with how it ended... A standout announcement of SteamWorld Heist, the beloved steampunk pirate strategy game, is getting a sequel. We can look forward to more tactical hat-shooting action as SteamWorld Heist 2 launches on the Switch, alongside its release on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox on August 8th. The sequel promises to expand on its unique blend of strategy and precision shooting, which will surely captivate both new players and veterans of the series.
An Apple Arcade Hit Makes the Switch
In another exciting reveal, the roguelike TMNT: Splintered Fate is transitioning from Apple Arcade to the Nintendo Switch. Slated for a July release, this game allows players to dive back into the action-packed world of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, promising hours of challenging gameplay and fun.
Simogo Returns with a Surreal Adventure: LORELEI AND THE LASER EYES
Fans of the indie studio Simogo, known for their innovative titles like Year Walk and Sayonara Wild Hearts, have a new game to anticipate. Their latest project, a surreal adventure game, is set to launch on May 16th on both the Switch and Steam. With Simogo's reputation for crafting unique narrative experiences, this upcoming title is expected to offer something truly special.
Little Kitty, Big City – Paws and Play
Not to be confused with Cat Quest III that was also shown at the Indie Direct, one of the cutest games featured at the Indie World showcase was Little Kitty, Big City. Set to launch on May 9th, this game invites players to explore a cozy, expansive city through the eyes of a tiny lost kitty. Reminiscent of Stray but with a more lighthearted and whimsical touch, it’s poised to capture the hearts of players looking for a charming and relaxing experience... But not necessarily one that's up my alley.
Anton Blast
In what looks to be a sped-up version of some sort of Wario platformer, Anton Blast is destruction mayhem, if a bit convoluted with everything that's happening at once.
I may check out the demo for it - that's available right now on the eShop.
WayForward Unveils Yars Rising
Continuing its legacy of delivering classic-style games, WayForward announced Yars Rising, a new 2D sci-fi action game coming to the Switch later this year. Known for engaging titles like Shantae and River City Girls, WayForward's latest venture is expected to combine intense action with an intriguing sci-fi storyline... I'm not really sold on the style of this one but hope to be pleasantly surprised.
While the absence of Hollow Knight: Silksong news was a letdown, the Spring Nintendo Indie Direct still managed to deliver a robust lineup of intriguing titles, ensuring that there's plenty to look forward to in the coming months for indie game enthusiasts and Nintendo Switch owners alike! ~Smash
