Dollar dollar Bullit Billz, ya'll!
The animated blockbuster, Super Mario Bros. Movie, has reached a significant milestone as it's now on track to exceed $1 billion in worldwide box office sales by the end of this weekend. This incredible achievement makes it the first movie of 2023 to hit the billion-dollar mark, and it's done so in a remarkably short period of just 26 days.
Deadline recently reported that the collaborative effort from Universal, Illumination, and Nintendo has garnered approximately $970 million in international sales as of Friday. With the movie's release in key markets such as Japan and Korea this week, the figures are expected to continue climbing rapidly.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie has already made history by claiming the title of the most successful video game adaptation ever. Additionally, it ranks as Illumination's third highest-grossing animated film, trailing only behind the wildly popular Minions and Despicable Me 3.
Given the current success, both Nintendo and Illumination are optimistic about the prospects of future collaborations... and with Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom releasing, I could only imagine a Zelda movie isn't that far off. However, for now, their attention is focused on the ongoing global triumph of the Mario Movie in theaters worldwide.
With this impressive achievement under its belt, the Super Mario Bros. Movie has undoubtedly secured its place in cinema history. As audiences continue to flock to theaters to experience the beloved video game characters on the big screen, the film's success is a testament to the enduring appeal of the Super Mario franchise.
I've already seen it 3 times in theaters with my family. We might go again. It's that perfect!
